Can you shrink your pore size?

This is probably the something I get ask serveral times a day.  The answer is NO.  Sadly, your pore size is genetically determined.  It’s simply impossible to make your pores physically smaller.  However, there are things you can do to minimize the appearance of your pores. Having and using a proper home care regime and receiving regular maintenance facials which might include fruit enzymes, microderm abrasion , dermafile diamond exfolation, or possibly a salicylic or  glycolic peel are where to begin.

You may notice your pores are more noticeable on certain area of the face,  Generally in your t-zone (forehead, nose and chin; the sebaceous glands are bigger in this area).  Those little dots on the surface of your skin are the openings of hair follicles. Each follicle  contains a sebaceous gland, which produces oil.

When the oil and dead skin cell get trapped in the pore the filament stretch the pore. The loss of collagen as we age can also make the pore appear larger due to the lack of elasticity.

If you want to make the pores appear smaller, you must keep them free of debris. Avoid make up and moisturizers with  petrolatum and mineral oil, both of the ingredients can irritate pores and make them look bigger.  Be sure you washing your face before bed to remove dirt, make up, pollutants and sweat.  A good rule of thumb is to also wash your face before and after working out. You don’t want the sweat carrying your make up and dirt into your pores.

You also want to exfoliate your skin regularly.  This will aid in removing pore clogging dead skin cells.  You want to choose an exfoliant that contains a sloughing agent such as retinol, alpha hydroxy acids or fruit enzymes.  These products may also contain a mechinal exfoliant as well such as micro beads.  If your skin is also prone to breakout, you might want to consider a cleanser or serum containing  salicylic acid instead.  Be sure to always use a SPF of 30 or greater as exfoliating your skin can make your skin more sensitive to the sun and it’s harmful rays!
