Skin Type verses Skin Conditions

main-skincare.png

As an Esthetician I get asked all the time “what type of facial or product is best for me.

Generally the first question I ask is what about your skin would you like to change?  Followed by what their current home care regime is.  Often times many clients are not even sure what products to buy.  This can be very confusing when you standing in the aisle with 100’s of products on the shelves.

First you need to know what your skin type is and secondly what skin condition you wish to treat.  Don’t know they difference?

Hopefully this will help break it down.

Skin Types are defined as the skin you are naturally born with and generally fall into these categories. Your basic skincare needs are affected by the type of skin you have and  will determine your daily facial routine.

Normal: Normal skin is characterize as having a smooth texture with small unnoticeable pores,  There are no visible blemishes, greasy patches or flaky areas.

Dry:  Dry Skin is often the most confusing as many people think their skin is dry when its actually dehydrated.  Dry skin is skincare means the absence of oils in the skin.  It is characterized as dull, tight and with flaky patches. The appearance of the pores will be small and your skin may also have lack of elasticity.

Oily: Oily Skin  is caused by overactive sebaceous glands and increased amount of lipids on the skin surface, Your skin will generally appear overly shiny and greasy.  The pores will also be larger and may also be congested and prone to blackheads.

Combination: Combination skin is the most popular skin type.  With a combination skin type your an share one or more of the other skin types listed. Most people with combination skin will have an oilier t-zone area (forehead nose and  chin) and drier areas on the cheeks and under the eyes.

Sensitive:  Sensitive skin is not really a skin type but rather as skin condition. Most people who claim to be sensitive may frequently experience redness, itching, burning, bumps/hives and/or dryness when the application of a topical skin care products. HOWEVER, those who experience sensitivity should ALWAYS choose products suited to sensitive skin before ANY other skin type or skin condition.

Skin Conditions are very different.  Skin conditions are not genetic and can change at any time. Skin conditions  are caused mainly by external factors and can be found on all the different Skin Types.

The most common  skin conditions are

Acne: consists of persistent break outs usually inflamed and/or red

Aging: loss of elasticity and muscle tone as well as wrinkles

Dehydration : 9 of of 10 people are dehydrated due lack of water in the skin (not lack of oils)  You can be oily and dehydrated at the same time.

Hyperpigmentation:  is characterized as having an uneven distribution of melanin or skin tone.  You can experience this in small patches or widely spread all over the body.

This can be caused by many factor

  • Sun exposure can cause Lentigines also known as Age Spots or Liver Spots.  Your best defense is wearing SPF daily!
  • Hormonal changes ( Melasma is common during pregnancy, with thyroid conditions, and in those whom use birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy.
  • Heredity
  • Acne (hyperpigmentation is caused by acne or some other trauma that causes  inflammation in the skin, it is known as PIH, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

These and other conditions can be managed with regular visits to your Esthetican and with a commitment to a proper home care regime.  Still unsure of which way to go?  Book yourself an Allure Signature Facial with me and let go over your skin type your skin condition and get you started with proper treatments and protocols.

  • Stimulate new cell growth
  • Improve skin tone and texture
  • Decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Alleviate dryness
  • Reduce redness
  • Retexture flaky, scaly skin
  • Clear the pores
  • Prevent the formation of black heads and acne
  • Minimise pore size.

Tri Polar RF Skin Firming Treatment

radio-frequency-facial

FDA Approved For Non-Surgical Face-Lifts!

Time and gravity, along with sun exposure and other environmental and lifestyle factors contribute to one of the most obvious signs of aging: lax, sagging skin. This results in lined skin, deeper wrinkles, and undefined facial contours. Tri-Polar Radio Frequency uses heat to stimulate fibroblasts (the cells that produce collagen) and reorganize collagen and elastin resulting in firmer, denser skin and re-sculpted contours. The treatment is completely non-invasive and comfortable.

This treatment painlessly delivers focused and optimal radio-frequency (RF) energy to the skin surface and to subcutaneous fat layers. Controlled energy is delivered via electrodes and limited to the treatment area. This focused delivery results in immediate visible results.
RF or Radio frequency electromagnetic energy is safe, non-invasive and a pain-free way to tighten skin that may have lost some of it’s elasticity around the forehead, eyes, cheeks,  jaw line, mouth and under the chin and neck.

It is also an effective way to tighten skin on the body such as post birth tummy, or where someone has lost a few pounds in weight. For improved results it is recommended to undergo a series of treatments.

Radio Frequency or RF is an excellent alternative to surgery in some cases.
RF skin tightening treatment offers an easy, comfortable, and non surgical way to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin, enlarged pore size and generally improve the tone and texture of the skin. Radio frequency is great for those who are looking for subtle improvements but not yet ready for a surgical face-lift or want to avoid surgery completely.

The Benefits of Radio Frequency are:

  • Lifted brow, cheeks, and jaw line
  • Improved skin quality
  • Reduction in double chin and full cheeks
  • Tighter, more defined facial contours
  • Diminished fine lines and wrinkles
  • Smooth, lifted neck

Frequently Asked Questions

What is RF or radio frequency?
Radio frequency or RF skin tightening treatment is an innovative therapy that uses radio frequency electromagnetic waves (energy waves in the range of about 3 kHz to 300 GHz) to stimulate collagen development deep within the dermal layers of the skin. Radio frequency re-structures and contracts existing collagen and stimulates fresh collagen production to give noticeable yet natural results. Clients benefit from a healthier, smoother and more youthful looking skin.

The use of electrical currents and other energy wave forms for medical purposes has been documented for over 100 years. Technology has come a long way in that time, especially in recent years though the basic principles are the same. Non ablative radio frequency energy is the newest addition to the treatment options available for skin tightening, cellulite and fat reduction. It is now possible to deliver RF energy to the deep dermal and sub-dermal layers of the skin, whilst protecting the epidermis (outer layer of the skin). Heating the dermal and sub dermal layers of the skin causes microscopic changes to the tissues and collagen contraction, with subsequent collagen remodeling over the months that follow.

The unique combination of processes involved in RF skin tightening provides both an immediate uplifting effect, followed by further longer term skin tightening, restructuring and rejuvenating benefits.

Radio frequency also gives deep, controlled heating of the fatty layers under the skin, which means that superficial fatty deposits can be broken down and drained through the lymphatic system, reducing the appearance of cellulite.

Types of Radio Frequency treatments

Monopolar RF (also called Unipolar): This refers to the treatment device having one electrode or pole. It works on the uppermost layers of the skin.
Bipolar: Refers to a treatment device that has two electrodes or poles. This penetrates to deeper levels of the skin.
Tri-Polar: Combination of mono and bipolar. Works on both upper layers and deeper layers of the skin

Tri-polar combines the effects of both mono and bi-polar radio frequency in a single treatment, which produces better pain free results. By delivering RF energy deep into dermal tissues, the heating action causes deep collagen structures within the skin to immediately tighten. Over time, new collagen is produced by the body to further tighten the skin.

Is radio frequency RF skin tightening safe?
Radio frequency has a proven track record and has been shown to be safe. It has been used in neurosurgery, dermatology, cardiology, and ENT for more than 70 years! The treatment is relaxing and pain-free.

How many treatments will I need?
It may be recommended to have a session of radio frequency skin tightening twice weekly with an average of 6 – 12 sessions in a treatment program, or a session once every 7-10 days, with an average of 8 sessions in a program. But this will all depend on the individual’s needs.

Can anyone have radio frequency RF skin tightening treatments?
Usually yes, though there are some contraindications. Clients with electrical devices such as: pacemakers, heart valves are ineligible for RF therapy. Those with metal implants or artificial metal joints in the treatment area are also ineligible. The RF energy may interfere with some of these devices and/or heat up the metal implants. There are other health conditions, pregnancy, nursing that are contraindicated
